Wing on a SUP

Level 1BeginnerFlat water

About this trick

Using a large SUP or beginner board with the foil still in the water lets you focus entirely on wing handling and board balance — without the extra challenge of the foil lifting you. This is the essential bridge between beach drills and actual foiling, and skipping it usually means more crashes later.

Key tips

  1. 1

Start on your knees — it lowers your center of gravity dramatically and makes balance much easier

  2. 2

Use the wing to steer, not the board — let the pull determine your direction while your feet control the board

  3. 3

Try riding in both directions without stopping; each jibe builds the muscle memory you'll need on foil

  4. 4

Stay in shallow water during this phase so you can stand up quickly after falls
