Understanding Wind & Courses

Level 1BeginnerFlat water

About this trick

Understanding the wind is the foundation of all water sports. This session covers the wind window, points of sail (upwind, beam reach, downwind), and how the wing generates power or depowers depending on your angle to the wind. Theory first — this is what you need before your first session.

Key tips

  1. 1

The 'wind window' is the 180° arc in front of you where the wing can generate power — neutral zone is directly upwind

  2. 2

Beam reach (90° to the wind) gives the most speed and control for beginners

  3. 3

Side-shore or side-on-shore wind is safest to learn in — it lets you drift back to shore if you crash

  4. 4

If in doubt about conditions, watch locals or ask at the beach — local knowledge is worth more than any app
