Wingfoil · Damien LeRoy
Backwinded riding means holding the wing with the leading edge facing toward you instead of away. The wing is essentially reversed — depowered and held flat. It's an unusual and unstable feeling at first, but this position is the entry to dozens of freestyle tricks. Learning to ride backwinded confidently opens up the entire intermediate freestyle progression.
Transition into backwinded from a neutral wing position — don't attempt it from a fully powered position
The backwinded wing generates no propulsive force — you rely entirely on the foil's momentum and any wave energy
Keep the wing held flat and close to your body to reduce drag
Practice holding the position for as long as possible before transitioning out — duration training builds the skill
