About this spot
The fishing village of El Cotillo on the northwest coast has two sides. Piedra Playa, the long beach south of the village, takes the full Atlantic swell in winter, with heavy shorebreak and a strong current in big swell. It can get big here! See video. North of the village, near the Tostón lighthouse, small lagoons protected by reef are flat at mid and high tide.

“Piedra Playa is for experienced wave wingers only: big shorebreak, rip currents, never ride alone. In the northeast trade wind the wind is offshore here, which keeps the water flat but makes a gear failure dangerous. The lagoons are small, get crowded in summer and have volcanic rocks at low tide. The village has good fish restaurants around the harbour. No school or rental on site, hire in Corralejo.”
