Wingfoiling in Merville-Franceville

Merville-Franceville is the main kite and wingfoil beach of Calvados, on the east side of the Orne estuary opposite Ouistreham. Northeast to west winds blow onshore to side onshore, and in summer an afternoon northeast sea breeze of around 15 knots is fairly common. At low tide the sandbanks give flat water; when the tide comes back in, small waves form on the bars. Kite-R Evolution runs wingfoil lessons and rental from a clubhouse with showers.

Local tips

“Launch at the west end, past the wooden barrier at the end of Boulevard Wattier; do not park at the barrier or on the track, park in the streets. From 16 June to 15 September launching is only allowed in the zone between the Orne estuary and channel no. 1, west of the dune lifeguard post; outside that period the whole beach is open. Keep 100 metres from the dune. South and southwest winds are offshore and gusty here, so do not go out in them. Watch the current near the estuary mouth.”
