Noirmoutier is a tidal island off the Vendee coast where an exposed Atlantic west side meets a sheltered bay of sandbanks, so almost every wind direction works somewhere. Plage de la Bosse near Port du Morin is the hub, with two schools, wave bumps on the ocean and flat shallow water on the bay. Huge tides reshape the water hourly, rewarding riders who plan sessions around the tide table.
“Pick your launch by wind direction: the west coast beaches for anything from southwest through north, and the bay side at La Fosse or Le Gois for east and northeast. Luzeronde and Les Sableaux are closed to kites and wings from 15 May to 15 September, so use La Bosse or Barbatre in high season. On the bay, currents run north towards the bridge near high tide and south towards Notre Dame de Monts near low tide, so stay upwind of your launch. Of course off shore winds can also be nice, especially if you have some swell. ”
