Lago di Silvaplana in the Engadin valley is the birthplace of kitesurfing, made famous by Robby Naish in the 1980s. At 1800 m altitude, it receives a powerful thermal NE wind — the Maloja — every afternoon, funnelled through the valley with exceptional consistency.
“There is only one official launch: Swiss Kitesurf Beach Silvaplana. Launching elsewhere is strictly forbidden. Season runs May–September. Arrive mid-morning to claim your spot before the Maloja kicks in around midday.”
