Lagoa de Óbidos
Óbidos, Portugal
Lagoa de Óbidos is a large tidal lagoon on Portugal's Silver Coast, separated from the Atlantic by a narrow sand bar. The lagoon provides superb flat-water wingfoil conditions when the strong Portuguese N/NW thermal wind blows — which it does reliably from May to September. The setting is stunning, with the medieval town of Óbidos visible on the hill.
Best months: May, June, July, August, September
Wind directions: N, NE, NW
Water: Flat
Bottom: Sand
Sports: Wingfoil, Kitesurf, Windsurf
Local tips
The lagoon entrance is narrow and the tidal flow can be strong — avoid the inlet channel. The best flat water is in the sheltered northern section near Foz do Arelho. The N thermal usually kicks in around noon and can reach 20–25 knots; smaller wings recommended for beginners.
