Giske sits on a low island northwest of Ålesund, ringed by white sand bays that face open Atlantic water. The northern beaches near Giskegjerdet turn flat and shallow in northeast wind, while northwest wind pushes chop and small waves across the bay. Spring brings the steadiest breeze, autumn the strongest. Vigra airport lies minutes away, so a session can follow a landing on the same afternoon. Water stays cold all year.
“Northeast wind is the local favourite here, giving flat water over sand with clean side onshore angles on the northern bays. Northwest and north wind bring chop and a bit of swell, which suits wave riding more than freeride. July is usually the weakest month for wind, so aim for spring or autumn. Launch areas are small, so spread out and keep an eye on other riders. Currents run hard between Giske, Vigra and Godoy on a changing tide, so stay upwind of the channels. Bring a thick wetsuit, boots and a hood, because the water stays under 15 degrees even in high summer.”
