Wassenaar, Noordzee, Netherlands
Wassenaarse Slag is a broad sandy North Sea beach between Scheveningen and Katwijk, backed by the Berkheide dunes. Because of the angle of the coast, winds from southwest through west and northwest to north work. The water is deep with current and waves, which suits experienced kiters, windsurfers and foilers. Access is controlled by two local clubs, so the beach stays quiet compared with the larger resorts nearby.
“Kitesurfing and windsurfing at the slag are only allowed for members of Surfclub Wassenaar or the coastal sailing club KZVW; there are no day passes. From the De Kuil car park walk to the beach, turn right at the lifeguard post for Surfclub Wassenaar and left for KZVW. Club lycra is required from March to November and municipal officers check it. Non members are pointed north of beach pole 92 or south of KZVW. Watch the tidal current.”
