Vlissingen, Westerschelde, Netherlands
Vlissingen sits where the Westerschelde meets the North Sea, and the Nollestrand west of the Nolledijk is the beach windsurfers and wingers use in town. It works from southeast through west to northwest. In a strong northwesterly the waves stay more manageable than on the Walcheren north coast. Deep water starts close to shore, the tidal current is strong and large seagoing ships pass close along the beach.
“Launch on the Nollestrand west of the Nolledijk and stay out of the marked swimming zones at the Badstrand and Nollestrand, where sailing and surfing are banned. Swimming is also banned near the pier heads at Nollehoofd. Kitesurfing is banned on all Vlissingen beaches all year. Keep well clear of the shipping lane, plan around the tide because the current runs hard, and carry a phone. Parking is in town near the boulevard.”
