Stavoren sits on the Frisian side of the IJsselmeer, where open water stretches for kilometres and the biggest swell on the lake builds. The bottom drops away faster than at most freeride spots, so the standing area is small but the ramps are short, steep and made for airtime. Southwest and west wind come in slightly onshore, which lines the waves up at a friendlier angle than further north along the dike.
“Launch on the south side of Stavoren, along the IJsselmeer dike near the yacht harbour, where a small sandy beach gives the entry and there is plenty of grass to rig on. Parking is generous and takes campers too, and hot showers plus the beach pavilion make it comfortable in colder months. West and southwest give the best ramps. With that much open water and a fast drop off, this is a spot for confident riders rather than first timers.”
