Sneekermeer

Sneekermeer, Terherne, Netherlands

About this spot

The Sneekermeer is one of the classic Frisian lakes, sitting between Sneek, Terherne and Goingarijp and famous for the sailing weeks held on its water. For wind sports it offers a wide open surface with room to run, flat to lightly choppy conditions and easy access from several beaches around the shore. Southwest and west wind blow across the longest stretch, giving reaches that suit both first sessions and fast freeride.

Local tips

Southwest through north are the working directions, with southwest giving the longest fetch across the lake. The Terherne side has a beach and a campsite directly on the water, which makes a full day or a weekend easy. Sailing traffic is heavy in summer, especially around Starteiland during regatta weeks, so check the calendar and keep well clear of race courses. The lake is busy but big, so there is nearly always a quiet corner to ride in.
