The Schildmeer at Steendam in Groningen got a brand new surf beach built specifically for wing and windsurfers, and it turned a quiet lake into one of the best organised spots in the north. A breakwater at the entry keeps the getting in and out easy and safe, and the beach itself has plenty of grass plus a pleasant water entry. The lake is sheltered and consistent, which suits every level.
“The new surf beach on the south shore is the main launch, with a breakwater at the entry that makes getting on and off the water straightforward even in stronger wind. Parking is generous and takes campers and trailers. Two more launches sit further east along the shore if the wind angle favours that side. Southwest through north are the working directions. Surfcenter organises events here, including the Wind and Water Festival, so check the calendar before you drive up.”
