Schellinkhout, Markermeer, Netherlands
Schellinkhout is a small watersports beach on the Uiterdijk west of the village, on the Markermeer between Hoorn and Enkhuizen. The shore faces southwest, so the prevailing southwest wind blows straight onshore, and south, southeast and west also work. The water stays hip deep for a long way out with short chop, which makes this one of the main beginner spots in North Holland. It gets very busy on windy weekends.
“Launch and land on the watersports beach, not on the grass, because slipping on the wet grass causes most accidents here. Park only in the lower car park outside the dike; parking on the dike is prohibited and enforced. A buoy line separates the surf beach from the swimming beach. Beginner kiters are expected to have completed at least five lessons before riding alone. NKV volunteers in recognisable clothing can help when it is crowded.”
