The Oudegaaster Brekken is a quiet Frisian lake at the village of Oudega, just inland from the IJsselmeer coast near Workum. The water is relatively flat and shallow, which makes it one of the friendliest lakes in Friesland for a first season on a wing or a sail. Westerly wind gives the cleanest runs across the open middle. A campsite and a sailing school sit right on the shore.
“West and southwest wind are the reliable directions and blow across the widest part of the lake. The shallow, flat water is exactly what you want when you are still learning waterstarts, and a windsurf school and sailing school operate on the lake with their own harbour. Camping De Bearshoeke lies directly on the water, which makes a weekend here easy to organise. Watch out for reed edges and soft mud along the banks, so keep your foil high near the shore.”
