Mirns, IJsselmeer, Netherlands
Mirns lies on the Gaasterland coast of the IJsselmeer in southwest Friesland, near the Mirnser Klif and the Rijsterbos. It is the only Frisian spot that works in east and southeast wind, and south to west also work. A large area of knee to hip deep water makes it a popular beginner spot. Because of this it gets crowded, and the small grass launch area fills up quickly on windy days.
“Stay inside the kitezone marked with yellow buoys. The Mokkebank nature reserve on the west side of the zone is closed to kiters to protect waterbirds. Launch from the beach rather than the slippery grass, and wrap your lines around the bar as soon as you land. At low water levels parts of the area get too shallow. More experienced kiters looking for space can try Stavoren instead.”
