Medemblik, IJsselmeer, Netherlands
Medemblik is a small beach on the IJsselmeer on the east side of the town, south of the regatta centre. North, northeast and east winds work best. A crescent shaped groyne shelters the water, and sandbanks keep it shallow over the first few hundred metres, with deeper water behind them for foiling. Stronger north to east winds build short, steep waves. Kiting is limited to a buoyed zone and the summer season.
“Kitesurfing is only allowed from April to September inside the zone marked with yellow buoys; the nature reserve next to it is off limits and entering it can bring a fine. Kiting at Andijk to the east is prohibited all year. The launch area is small, sandy and lined with trees and bushes, so keep your kite away from them. Wear boots because of sharp shells. Parking is free. Advanced kiters go upwind past the sandbanks.”
