About this spot
The Leekstermeer sits on the border of Drenthe and Groningen, west of the city, and is one of the shallowest and calmest lakes in the north. Maximum depth is around one and a half metres, so you can stand almost anywhere, which makes it the classic place to take a first windsurf or wingfoil lesson. The eastern half has a firmer sand bottom and is the side that riders use.

“Stick to the eastern half of the lake, where the bottom is firmer sand. The western side is soft mud with debris in places, so wear boots rather than going in barefoot. Depth tops out around one and a half metres, so a short foil mast is the sensible choice and a fall costs you nothing. Cnossen Leekstermeer on the shore runs windsurf courses in two hour blocks daily and has a holiday park with camping right beside the water.”
