Kijkduin – Zandmotor

Den Haag, Netherlands, Netherlands

The Zandmotor is a genuine engineering marvel turned accidental kite paradise. The man-made sand peninsula creates a shallow tidal lagoon on its lee side — flat water, no current, no waves — while the North Sea does its thing metres away. When the tide drops, the lagoon expands into almost ideal wing foiling territory. It works with almost any wind direction because the lagoon is always in the lee.

Best months: March, April, May, September, October, November

Wind directions: N, NW, W, SW, S

Water: Sea

Bottom: Sand

Sports: Windsurf, Wingfoil, Kiting

Local tips

Lagoon is largest at low tide — time your session to coincide. Safest spot in Den Haag area: kite failure just washes you onto the sandbar. Schools run daily lessons.
