Katwijk aan Zee, Noordzee, Netherlands
Katwijk aan Zee is a long, wide sandy North Sea beach northwest of Leiden with three club zones along the boulevard. Southwest is the classic direction, and west to north also works. Water gets deep quickly and there is current along the coast, with a shorebreak and further breaks offshore when the swell builds. The local clubs run the zones in summer, which keeps the spot organised on busy days.
“From 1 April to 1 October you may only ride inside the three club zones, and you need a club or day membership and the club lycra: Skuytevaert in the south, Katwijkse Branding Surfclub in the middle and Airtime north of the outlet canal. Outside that period the whole beach is open. Parking is paid, for example at Boulevard Zeezijde or the Noordduinen car park near Airtime. Expect current and deep water close to shore.”
