Harlingen, Waddenzee, Netherlands
Harlingen beach lies against the Westerzeedijk, a short walk from the historic centre, on the Waddenzee. Kiters and windsurfers use it in southwest, west and northwest wind, best from two hours before to two hours after high water. At high tide you may not be able to stand, and at low tide the soft bottom turns into knee deep mud. Current and chop make it a spot for experienced kiters and windsurfers.
“Park for free at the large car park at the foot of the Westerzeedijk, take the steps over the dike and rig on the beach. From 1 April to 31 August kiters and windsurfers must stay between the yellow buoys. Go from two hours before to two hours after high water. The bottom is sand with shells, then soft mud. Current is strong, so you need to ride upwind confidently.”
