Spaarbekken Grote Rug, Dordrecht, Netherlands
Grote Rug is a water reservoir in the Merwedelanden recreation area on the edge of Dordrecht, and the base of surf club Windkracht. The basin is sheltered by its embankments, so the water stays flat to lightly choppy even when it blows hard outside. It is a friendly, social spot rather than a big open one, and the club field, canteen and changing rooms make it an easy place to spend a whole afternoon.
“The clubhouse on the Baanhoekweg has toilets, changing rooms and a canteen with a warm snack and a view over the basin. A large grass field around the building gives plenty of room to rig. Southwest through northwest are the prevailing directions and work best over the embankment. The reservoir is compact, so expect short reaches and plenty of turns rather than long distance runs. Windkracht runs lessons here through the summer, including during the Dordtse Summer Games.”
