Monnickendam, Gouwzee, Netherlands
The Gouwzee is a sheltered bay of the Markermeer between Monnickendam, Marken and Volendam. Windsurfers and wingers launch from the Hemmeland recreation area east of Monnickendam, which works in north, east and south winds. Depth varies from about half a metre to over two metres. Kitesurfing is not allowed here, so the water stays quiet. Sailing over to Volendam and back is a local challenge of about twelve kilometres.
“Drive into Monnickendam via the N247, follow the signs to Hemmeland and park at P5 near the surf area; parking is free. Rig on the grass at the water's edge. In west wind use De Nes on the dike towards Marken instead. Watch for weed that catches on fins in some areas. The Gouwzee is a sensitive area for waterbirds, so keep your distance from resting flocks.”
