Eemshaven, Waddenzee, Netherlands
Eemshaven sits at the far northeast corner of the country, where the Wadden Sea meets the Eems estuary and the wind farm on the dike tells you all you need to know about how much it blows. This is a tidal spot with real current, best on west to north wind and an outgoing tide. There are no facilities beyond parking on the dike, so come fully self sufficient.
“Kitesurfing is not allowed at Eemshaven. The area is Natura 2000 with a high water bird refuge and a wind farm, and the province concluded there is no room for a kite zone, so this is a wing and windsurf spot only. Timing matters more than at any lake. West to north wind with an ebbing tide gives the cleanest water. Check the tide table before you drive, watch the current in the estuary and never sail here alone.”
