Amstelmeer

Lutjestrand, Amstelmeer, Netherlands

About this spot

The Amstelmeer in the Kop van Noord Holland is a former sea arm behind the dike, and the Lutjestrand on its west shore is one of the best all round wind spots in the province. Sea wind rolls in off the North Sea barely a few kilometres away, so it arrives clean and steady. The first seventy five metres stay hip deep over firm sand, about as good as a learning area gets.

Local tips

Every direction except northeast works at the Lutjestrand, with west, southwest and northwest the strongest. The long hip deep shallow makes it ideal for a first foil mast of around sixty centimetres, and the sandy bottom is kind on gear. Parking at the beach is free and the water sports club and the Viking Surfcenter cover gear, rental and repairs. Wind here is more reliable than on most inland lakes thanks to the open sea just over the dike.
