Starnberger See

The Starnberger See south of Munich is a deep, beautiful lake that comes alive only in strong Föhn conditions blowing from the south. On Föhn days the warm southerly can produce excellent wing and windsurf conditions, but the lake is otherwise too calm to be worth the trip. Kiting is not practised here.

Local tips
Launch from Ambach or Tutzing on the east or west shore. The lake only delivers in genuine Föhn — check forecasts and watch for the distinctive Foehn arch over the Alps. Föhn can drop off suddenly; always rig conservatively.
