Altenteil is a bay on the northwest tip of Fehmarn, just east of the Markelsdorfer Huk headland. In west northwest to northwest wind the headland lines up the swell and sandbanks offshore give slow, rolling waves that suit wave riding on a foil. East wind blows side shore with small chop. The beach is stony and drops off quickly, with hardly any standing area. Two campsites sit directly behind the beach.
“Park in the car park in front of Ahoi Camp, which is open all year and has toilets. The access road to the campsite is an emergency route with a strict no stopping rule and tickets are issued. Wear neoprene shoes because of stones at the entry. In northwest wind there is a strong current to the right (east), so take a wing that is big enough to get back upwind. Watch the remains of a small pier in the middle of the bay and wooden piles on the far left. The area around the campsite is a nature reserve: launch only from the beach and respect the signs.”
