Icaraizinho, Amontada, Brazil
Icaraí de Amontada is a fishing village on the west coast of Ceará where the trade wind blows side onshore almost every afternoon from June to January. South of the village the tide leaves an almost flat shallow bay, the centre stays choppy freeride water, and clean waves wrap around the rocky point to the north. Warm water, long sandy beaches and easy downwinders make it a classic Brazilian season base.
“Wind usually fills in around late morning and peaks in the afternoon at 18 to 26 knots, so mornings are for coffee and the beach. Check the tide before you rig, because the flat water south of the bay only appears at low tide and the shallow lagoon towards Moitas dries out completely. The rocky point on the north side holds clean waves but also urchins, so booties are worth packing. Downwinders from Caetanos to Icaraí and on to Moitas are the classic runs and every school can arrange a pickup. August and September are the windiest months of all.”
