About this spot
The Spaarbekken is a large reservoir next to the IJzer in Nieuwpoort, a few kilometres from the beach. The water is flat and the banks are low, so the wind arrives clean from almost any direction. Sport Vlaanderen Nieuwpoort runs the watersport centre on the bank, with a new building since 2022 that has changing rooms, showers and a canteen. It is the flat-water alternative for wingers who find the North Sea too rough.

“The reservoir is managed by Sport Vlaanderen Nieuwpoort; ask the centre about a pass before you go out with your own gear. Lessons and camps use the same water, keep clear of groups. The centre also hosted the Foil Fest here in 2020. For waves and chop go to the beach clubs at Westende or Nieuwpoort-Bad.”
