The bottom turn is the foundational wave-riding manoeuvre. As you drop down the face of the wave, you use the bottom section to carve a powerful turn that sets you up for the top section. The speed and direction you get from a good bottom turn determines the quality of everything that follows. It's simple in concept but takes time to do powerfully.
Timing is everything — initiate the bottom turn at the base of the wave face, not in the flats
Drive through the turn with your back foot and heelside edge — think of pushing into the arc
Keep the wing depowered during the bottom turn — you have wave energy; don't let the wing interfere with the carve
Aim the exit up the face of the wave toward the lip — the bottom turn sets the line for your top move
